Gazing up at the St.-Petri-Kirche, one might wonder about the stories etched within its weathered stones. St.-Petri-Kirche stands proudly on Dresden’s Großenhainer Platz. This magnificent neo-Gothic church has witnessed the ebb and flow of history. It has served as a beacon of faith for generations. St.-Petri-Kirche emerged from the burgeoning Dreikönigskirchgemeinde. In 1881, this community, overflowing with over 90,000 members, saw the birth of St.-Petri-Gemeinde. The congregation adopted the name “Sankt-Petri-Gemeinde” that same year, drawing inspiration from the Apostle Peter. The cornerstone for St.-Petri-Kirche was laid on May 15, 1889. The design, a testament to neo-Gothic architecture, was conceived by Leipzig architect Julius Zeiẞig. Interestingly, to keep costs down, the church was constructed using brick masonry. This choice gave the church a unique aesthetic, distinct from grander stone structures. The dedication of St.-Petri-Kirche on November 5, 1890, was a momentous occasion. The church boasted a seating capacity of 645 and an impressive 68-meter tower, crowned with a gilded knob and ornate cross. Above the main entrance, a striking image of Peter amidst the four Evangelists was painted on a golden background. The church’s interior was adorned with stained-glass windows. These windows depicted scenes such as the parables of the Prodigal Son and the Good Samaritan. The resurrected Christ, flanked by John the Baptist and Peter, was also featured. The church also housed a Sauer organ, which filled the space with sacred music. In 1906, St.-Petri-Kirche underwent expansion with the addition of a sacristy. This expansion, designed by the Dresden architectural firm Schilling & Graebner, added two rooms around the apse. A remarkable majolica relief by Otto Petrenz, created in 1909, graces the stairway to these rooms. It portrays the resurrected Christ and the astonished guards on Easter morning. The words of Peter, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life!”, are inscribed above the archway. Tragedy struck during the air raids on Dresden on February 14, 1945, when St.-Petri-Kirche and the rectory were gutted by fire. Further damage occurred on May 7, 1945, when a shell hit the church tower. Despite the devastation, the spirit of St.-Petri-Kirche endured. After the war, the church was painstakingly rebuilt between 1950 and 1955. It was rededicated on December 18, 1955, marking a triumph of resilience and faith. St.-Petri-Kirche continues to stand as a symbol of hope and perseverance. It has been a spiritual home for generations. Its story, woven into the fabric of Dresden, is one of both tragedy and renewal.
