Built back in 1867-70, this is St Peter Elgin Avenue, a church with a fascinating history. It was originally a place of worship built by the architects Newman and Billing, and it stood here, proudly serving the community, until 1975. The church was part of a larger community complex, and its original purpose was to provide worship space, but also community, and support for people in the surrounding areas. While it once stood here as a place of prayer and community, you can still feel its history, even though it was eventually demolished. The building was designed in a mixed Gothic style, with a tall spire and a large, ornate ceiling. It is not easy to see the church today, but you can still find some traces of its legacy here – just look at the local history. The building that stands here today is in a stark modern style, a far cry from the grandeur of the original St Peter Elgin Avenue. This newer building, which was built in 1975, reflects an era where architectural trends embraced simplicity. If you look closely you can see that this new building does include a large, open community center where the new community can gather for prayer, fellowship, and support. St Peter Elgin Avenue may no longer be physically here, but you can still feel its spirit in the space where it once stood.
