In 1884, a group of Danish seminary students planted a seed of faith in south Minneapolis. That seed blossomed into St. Peder’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. St. Peder’s initially stood elsewhere in south Minneapolis. The church moved to its current location near the Mississippi River Parkway in 1961. The spirit of the “happy Danes” still thrives within these walls. St. Peder’s embraces the Grundtvig tradition. This philosophy emphasizes celebrating life, respecting the world, and the importance of lifelong learning. It’s more than just Bible study. It’s about engaging with the world around us. The church continues traditions like Æbelskiver Sunday, where the community gathers for Danish pancakes. Another beloved tradition is singing around the Christmas tree in December. St. Peder’s prides itself on its history. Many families have a third-generation presence. The church draws members from the immediate neighborhood and the southern metro area. St. Peder’s is a small but socially engaged congregation. It has a strong sense of community and welcomes all to join its mission and ministry. St. Peder’s has a long-standing tradition of supporting ministries beyond its own walls. An endowment fund, initiated in 1984, helps make this possible. In 1999, St. Peder’s adopted its current mission statement. It chose to become a Reconciling in Christ (RIC) congregation. This affirmed its commitment to serve with “open hearts, open hands, and open doors.” St. Peder’s believes in Jesus, loves God, and welcomes all people. The church embraces authentic worship, values the local church, and strives to see God’s kingdom established across the earth. It’s a place where faith, tradition, and social engagement intertwine. St. Peder’s is more than just a church; it’s a living testament to the enduring power of community and faith.
