Whispers of history echo within the mighty walls of St Paul’s Cathedral. A phoenix from the ashes, St Paul’s stands as a testament to London’s resilience. The cathedral we see today is actually the fifth church to occupy this sacred ground. The first St Paul’s, built in AD 604, fell victim to flames, just like its successors. Old St Paul’s, a magnificent Gothic structure, was a central hub of London life for centuries. It even housed shops and businesses within its walls. Its towering spire was a defining feature of the London skyline until a lightning strike in 1561 brought it crashing down. Inigo Jones attempted a classical makeover in the 1630s, but the Great Fire of London in 1666 reduced Old St Paul’s to rubble. From this devastation emerged the vision of Sir Christopher Wren. Appointed in 1669, Wren initially envisioned a structure vastly different from the St Paul’s we admire today. His first design, a domed vestibule leading to a rectangular church, was deemed “not stately enough.” A second Greek cross plan was rejected by the clergy. His third, the “Great Model,” a grand structure costing over £500 (a small fortune at the time!), was deemed too unconventional. Finally, Wren’s Warrant design, a blend of Gothic and classical styles, received royal approval. However, Wren, ever the perfectionist, continued to refine his design as St Paul’s rose from the ashes. His masterpiece was officially declared complete by Parliament on Christmas Day, 1711. The dome, a marvel of engineering, consists of three shells: an outer dome, a hidden brick cone for support, and a breathtaking inner dome adorned with Sir James Thornhill’s magnificent paintings. Climb to the Whispering Gallery, 99 feet above the floor, and experience its unique acoustic properties. A whisper against the wall can be heard on the opposite side. Ascend further to the Stone and Golden Galleries for panoramic views of London. The cathedral’s interior is a treasure trove of artistry. Grinling Gibbons’ intricate wood carvings adorn the choir stalls, pulpit, and Bishop’s throne. Jean Tijou’s exquisite ironwork graces the gates and balustrades. In the crypt, beneath the cathedral’s grand expanse, lie the tombs of some of Britain’s most illustrious figures: Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington, and Sir Christopher Wren himself. A simple Latin inscription marks Wren’s tomb: “Lector, si monumentum requiris, circumspice” – “Reader, if you seek his monument, look around you.” St Paul’s has witnessed royal weddings and funerals, national celebrations and commemorations. It has endured bomb threats, suffragette attacks, and the ravages of war. It stands as a symbol of London’s enduring spirit, a beacon of hope and resilience in the heart of the city.
