“Lost in suburbia, south of Wallington’s heart,” a local might say, “lies St. Patrick’s Church.” St. Patrick’s Church isn’t your typical ancient London landmark. It’s a relatively young church, built in 1932. The architects, Newberry & Fowler, designed it with a unique blend of styles, creating a structure that’s both picturesque and strong. St. Patrick’s Church stands as a testament to the growth of Wallington. Before the railway arrived in 1844, the area was mostly undeveloped. But as the town expanded southward, the need for a new church became clear. In 1910, land was secured for St. Patrick’s. Interestingly, the church’s name comes from the patron saint of March 17th, the day the building committee first met. A temporary church served the community until the current building was dedicated in 1932. This permanent structure was also intended as a memorial to local parishioners lost in World War I. The church’s carved wooden Communion Table, a gift from a churchwarden and his wife, serves as a poignant reminder of this dedication. It commemorates their son who died in the Battle of the Somme. St. Patrick’s Church has witnessed much throughout its history. It endured the challenges of World War II, with blackouts affecting service times and dwindling congregations. Yet, the church remained a source of hope and peace. It even started a Christmas Toy Service in 1942 for the children of Queen Mary’s Hospital, a tradition that continues to this day. St. Patrick’s Church has seen numerous changes in its neighborhood, but it has remained a steadfast center of worship and service. From curates-in-charge to its first vicar, David King, many dedicated individuals have contributed to its rich history. The new church center, opened in 2022, stands as a testament to the church’s continued mission of serving the community.
