In 1891 a temporary iron building housed St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School. This humble beginning marked the start of a rich history. The school served children aged 4 to 13. It was a mixed all-age school. Imagine 220 children packed into this temporary building! By 1894 that number swelled to an incredible 256. The staff was small. There was only a headteacher and two assistants. A few pupil teachers helped. There were only three classrooms. Space was so cramped at least one class had lessons in the playground by 1907.

St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School wasn’t always in its current location. A new building opened in 1909. It cost £5200. This new building housed separate boys’ and girls’ schools. Each had its own headteacher. The old space under the church became an infant department. It was under the girls’ school headteacher’s supervision. The school’s enrollment was huge. By 1909 there were 339 students. The following year it rose to 430. That’s a far cry from the 144 students today. The school site itself is much larger now. It boasts numerous classrooms and many more teachers.

Today St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School on Holmes Road in London continues its mission. It serves children aged 3 to 11. It’s a voluntary aided school. Miss Chloe Toop is the current headteacher. The school’s capacity is 210 pupils. Currently 144 students attend. It’s a mixed gender school. The school prides itself on its Roman Catholic religious character. It falls under the Archdiocese of Westminster. Ofsted rated the school highly in 2024. They gave it “Good” ratings for Quality of Education and Behaviour and Attitudes. “Outstanding” ratings went to Personal Development and Leadership and Management. The Early Years Provision received a “Good” rating as well.
