St. Pankratius

Around 1170 a sturdy square tower was built. This is the heart of St Pankratius in Leipzig’s Engelsdorf district. The church stands on a hill. It’s a little away from the village green. The eastern side still shows the apse’s original footprint. This is a testament to its Romanesque origins. The nave with its three-sided gallery was rebuilt in 1832. The style is classicist. A unique feature is the free-standing bell frame. It extends from the ground to the top of the tower’s interior. In 2010 the cast iron bells were replaced. They were replaced with three new bronze bells. The church is surrounded by a cemetery. Over 150 victims of World War II are buried there. St Pankratius has been known by that name since at least 1520. A document in the Leipzig City Archive mentions it. It states Mathias Schulz owed the St Pankratius Church 61 guilders and 7 groschen. The church and its almost 800-year-old tower have recently undergone extensive renovations. New stairs and windows were installed in the tower. Beams were renewed. Floors were relaid. Cracks in the tower were repaired. In 2005 a special clock was installed. It came from the demolished St Mark’s Church in Leipzig. It chimes every hour and quarter-hour. The clock faces were added to all four sides of the tower. The original apse’s footprint is marked by paving stones. St Pankratius is part of the Alesius parish of Leipzig. This parish also includes several other churches in and around Leipzig. The church’s organ was built in 1924 by Alfred Schmeisser. It was thoroughly restored in 2017.
