The school building stands tall, a testament to the history of education in Southwood Road. It wasn’t always this stately structure though. St Olave’s Preparatory School, a haven for children aged 3 to 11, has a rich history, dating back to the early 20th century.

It all started when Miss M Aldwinkle, a passionate educator, purchased the building at 106 Southwood Road for her 21st birthday. Over the years, St Olave’s Preparatory School was known for its dedication to nurturing a culture of kindness, where every child was encouraged to achieve their best, but also to grow as a genuine individual.

The school thrived through World War II, with Miss Aldwinkle even training as an air raid warden to ensure the safety of her students. She was a dedicated teacher, often sleeping in classrooms, keeping the school’s windows blacked out, and even accompanying a group of children during their evacuation to the Isle of Sheppey.

When Miss Aldwinkle retired in 1970, a group of parents stepped in and established The St Olave’s School Trust to ensure the school’s survival. The Trust continues to run the school today, carrying on its legacy of providing a top-notch educational experience for the community’s children.

Today, St Olave’s Preparatory School boasts spacious facilities, including a purpose-built building for older pupils and a state-of-the-art EYFS building. The school is also home to dedicated music rooms, libraries, a workshop, and a teaching kitchen. With its warm and welcoming atmosphere, St Olave’s Preparatory School continues to nurture young minds and inspire a love of learning in all its students.
