St Michael’s Aveley is situated in Thurrock, Essex. It’s right on the high street in the village of Aveley. The entrance to the graveyard and church is next to the war memorial.

Let’s take a closer look at St Michael’s Aveley. Its origins trace back to the early 12th century. The nave is from this period. A low 13th-century tower once stood here. Later, in the 15th century, it was rebuilt with a spire.

If St Michael’s Aveley is unlocked, step inside. You can see the 12th-century font. Admire the Jacobean pulpit dated 1621. Note the hexagonal sounding board above it.

Aveley thrived from the 11th to 17th centuries. In 1086, its population was recorded as 33. By 1801, it had risen to 543. After World War II, the London County Council bought land here. They established the Belhus housing estate for Londoners. This increased the population five-fold.

Getting here is relatively easy. Rainham station is the closest from London. You can catch the 372 bus to Lakeside from the Rainham war memorial. Get off at Aveley library and turn right onto the high street. St Michael’s Aveley is just past the mini-roundabout at the Ship pub.

From Grays station, take any bus to Lakeside bus station. Change to the 372 bus towards Hornchurch. Alight at Hall Avenue. Walk back to Ship Lane and turn left towards the mini-roundabout.

St Michael’s Aveley is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a Grade I listed building. It is a place of worship with regular services. Holy Communion or Morning Prayer are held at 9:45. Holy Communion is a service with hymns. Morning Prayer is a service without communion. On months with five Sundays, there’s a joint team service on the fifth Sunday.
