Marvelous Melbourne’s St Michael’s Uniting Church stands tall. A testament to faith and history it graces Collins Street. Built in 1866-1867 this magnificent structure boasts a Lombardic Romanesque style. It’s a true architectural marvel the first of its kind in Victoria. The polychrome brickwork is stunning. Round Romanesque arches frame its doors and windows.

Originally the Collins Street Independent Church it became a Congregational Union of Australia church. Later in 1990 it was renamed St Michael’s Uniting Church. It’s known for its liberal theology and political radicalism. This was especially true under the long ministry of Dr Francis Macnab. He served from 1971 to 2016. He was a remarkable figure. Dr Macnab founded the Cairnmillar Institute. It’s a non-profit clinic offering counselling and postgraduate studies.

The church underwent a major restoration in 1978. The interior was completely transformed. The communion table was raised. The choir and organ moved. The original wooden pews were replaced with padded metal ones. Two candelabras now flank the communion table. They represent the Divine presence and the Light of the World. Beautiful stained glass windows were added in 1988. They depict humanity’s journey towards the New Jerusalem. The artist Klaus Zimmer created them. They are a stunning addition.

Rev Dr Margaret Mayman is the current minister. She was appointed in 2020. Born in New Zealand she’s a key figure in Australia’s LGBTQIA+ rights movement. St Michael’s under her leadership embraces an open and affirming message. It provides a sanctuary for those hurt by religious institutions. The church also offers low-cost counselling at Mingary. It’s a contemplative space opened in 1999. It operates in conjunction with the Cairnmillar Institute.

St Michael’s Uniting Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub. It’s a center for social justice. It’s a place of comfort and healing. It’s a significant part of Melbourne’s rich history and culture. This beautiful church offers much more than you might expect. So take a moment to appreciate its beauty its history and its message.
