A relic of St Matthew. Can you believe it? That’s right here in St Matthew’s Church Westminster a hidden treasure within this remarkable building.

St Matthew’s Church Westminster a beautiful Anglican church stands proudly in the heart of London. Close to the Houses of Parliament Westminster Abbey and Church House it’s a significant part of London’s history. It’s been intimately connected with the revival of the Catholic heritage within the Church of England since its very beginning. A pivotal figure in that movement Bishop Frank Weston served here from 1896 to 1898.

The story of St Matthew’s is one of dedication resilience and artistic beauty. Sir George Gilbert Scott designed this magnificent structure. His brother-in-law George Frederick Bodley along with other talented artists such as Charles Kempe and Ninian Comper contributed to its stunning interior. Initially built between 1849 and 1851 it served a poor district of Westminster. The church wasn’t just a place of worship it was also a much-needed sanctuary in the midst of the notorious Devil’s Acre slum.

Tragedy struck in May 1977. A devastating fire almost completely destroyed St Matthew’s. But the spirit of this remarkable church was undeterred. The dedication was renewed. A smaller yet equally captivating church was rebuilt and rededicated in November 1984. Many original features were salvaged and incorporated into the new design. This includes the magnificent stained glass and the impressive Stations of the Cross sculpted by Joseph Cribb.

The interior of St Matthew’s Church Westminster is breathtaking. Examine the Lady Chapel a testament to Ninian Comper’s early work in England. Notice the English altar a unique piece he claimed to be the first of its kind since the Reformation. This special place is used daily for prayer and services. Find the High Altar. There you will find a relic of St Matthew himself. This ancient holy object is a constant reminder of the church’s faith. It is a powerful symbol. It serves as a focus for prayer and reflection for all who enter.

St Matthew’s is more than just stones and stained glass. It is a living testament to faith community and artistic expression. It’s a place of solace a place of worship a place where history and faith beautifully intertwine. A place where a relic of St Matthew is enshrined.
