Why is Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota sometimes called “Saint Mary’s College”? Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, a prestigious institution, wasn’t always a university. Founded in 1912 as Saint Mary’s College, it remained so for many years. This men’s college, a brainchild of Bishop Patrick Richard Heffron, was run by the Winona Diocese. The college transitioned to a four-year liberal arts program by 1925. Then, in 1933, the De La Salle Christian Brothers took the reins. This religious order, known for its dedication to teaching, shaped the college’s future. A pivotal moment arrived in 1969 when Saint Mary’s College opened its doors to women, becoming co-educational. This era also saw the college acquire the campus of the former College of Saint Teresa, a women’s college in Winona. It wasn’t until 1995 that the institution officially became Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. This change recognized the university’s expanding graduate and professional programs and set it apart from institutions with similar names. Today, Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota stands as a testament to its rich history and commitment to education.
