Hidden within Oak Lawn, a suburb of Chicago, rests St. Mary’s Malankara Orthodox Church. This isn’t just any church. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven from threads of Indian Christianity and the rich traditions of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. St. Mary’s stands as a testament to faith, a beacon for the community since its establishment in 1982. Initially a small extension of St. Thomas Orthodox Church, led by the Very Rev. Kuriakos Thottupuram, St. Mary’s quickly blossomed under his guidance. His nephew, Rev. Fr. Cherian Kunnel, also played a vital role in the church’s early years. The church’s journey led it from Chicago to Park Ridge, before finally settling in its current Oak Lawn location in 2001. This move marked a significant milestone, a testament to the dedication and hard work of the congregation. The church complex itself tells a story. Two buildings stand side-by-side: the church and a Sunday school building with an attached parsonage. Step inside the sanctuary and you’ll be greeted by a breathtaking display of Orthodox iconography. The twelve apostles, the shrines of St. Mary and St. Thomas, and images of St. Jude Thaddeus, St. Gregorios of Parumala, St. George, and the Transfiguration of Christ adorn the walls. A more recent addition is the grand icon of the Life of St. Mary, flanked by the Archangels Michael and Gabriel. But St. Mary’s is more than just a beautiful building. It’s a living, breathing community. The Sunday school, bustling with children from nursery to senior class, nurtures young minds in the Orthodox faith. The youth fellowship provides a space for teenagers to connect through Bible studies and social gatherings. Families gather for monthly prayer meetings, retreats, and outings, fostering a strong sense of belonging. St. Mary’s also actively participates in regional and diocesan programs, connecting with other parishes and strengthening the bonds of faith. The church is known for its welcoming atmosphere, embracing all who seek the intercession of St. Mary, the Mother of God. St. Mary’s Malankara Orthodox Church isn’t just a place of worship; it’s a vibrant hub of faith, community, and tradition. It serves as a reminder of the power of faith to bring people together, offering a spiritual home to those seeking solace and connection in the heart of Oak Lawn.
