St. Mary’s Malankara Orthodox Church

Hidden within Oak Lawn, a suburb of Chicago, rests St. Mary’s Malankara Orthodox Church. This isn’t just any church. The church’s journey led it from Chicago to Park Ridge, before finally settling in its current Oak Lawn location in 2001. Two buildings stand side-by-side: the church and a Sunday school building with an attached parsonage. The twelve apostles, the shrines of St. Mary and St. Thomas, and images of St. Jude Thaddeus, St. Gregorios of Parumala, St. George, and the Transfiguration of Christ adorn the walls. A more recent addition is the grand icon of the Life of St. Mary, flanked by the Archangels Michael and Gabriel. But St. Mary’s is more than just a beautiful building.
