Towering above the West End of Edinburgh, a majestic structure stands defiant against the passage of time. This is St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, a beacon of faith and a symbol of the enduring spirit of Scottish Episcopalianism. The Cathedral was built in the 19th century, a testament to the Victorian era’s love for Gothic Revival architecture. Its foundation stone was laid in 1874 by the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry, a family that had long supported the Scottish Episcopal Church. The Cathedral is the Mother Church of all Scottish Episcopal churches in the Edinburgh Diocese, a region that stretches from the Firth of Forth to the English border. It is also the see of the Lord Bishop of Edinburgh, one of the seven bishops of the Scottish Episcopal Church.

The Cathedral boasts an impressive central tower that soars 90 metres (295 ft) into the sky, making it the tallest building in the Edinburgh urban area. This striking structure is adorned with a spire, which is visible from miles away. However, the tower is not alone. Flanking its west side are two smaller but no less majestic spires, known as “Barbara” and “Mary,” after the Walker sisters who funded the Cathedral’s construction. Look carefully at the Cathedral’s entrance, and you will see the ornate west entrance on Palmerston Place, featuring Saint Peter and the key to the Kingdom of Heaven.

The interior of St Mary’s is just as impressive as its exterior. Visitors are greeted by a soaring nave, bathed in the soft light filtering through stained glass windows. The Cathedral’s choir is internationally renowned, and its daily choral services have a long and distinguished history. The choirboys and girls of St Mary’s are fortunate to have a special rehearsal space, known as the Song School. This beautiful building, designed by John Oldrid Scott, the grandson of the Cathedral’s original architect, features murals by the Irish-born artist Phoebe Anna Traquair.

Beyond the choir, the Cathedral is also home to a fascinating collection of artworks and historical objects. Among the most notable are the Rood Cross by Sir Robert Lorimer, a striking figure of Christ crucified on a background of Flanders poppies, and the “Millennium Window” by Eduardo Paolozzi, an artist born in Leith. The Cathedral is a vibrant hub for its community, hosting a variety of events throughout the year. Whether you are attending a service, a concert, or simply taking a moment to reflect, St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral offers a sanctuary for the soul and a reminder of the enduring power of faith.
