In the heart of London, nestled among the elegant houses of The Boltons, stands St Mary the Boltons. This beautiful Anglican church has been a landmark in the community for almost two centuries. St Mary the Boltons wasn’t always surrounded by such a grand neighborhood. The area, known as The Boltons, was farmland until the mid-1800s. As London expanded, developer Robert Gunter envisioned a prestigious residential estate here. He believed a church would add a touch of class and sophistication. And so, St Mary the Boltons became the cornerstone of Gunter’s vision, built even before the houses were complete. Designed by George Godwin the Younger, the church was consecrated in 1850. It was built to impress, with Kentish ragstone walls and a spire that reaches for the sky. Sadly, the grandeur of the interior has faded over time. The intricately stencilled designs of fruits and flowers on the walls have been painted over, leaving them bare. Despite the changes, St Mary the Boltons remains a testament to the vision of its founder and a peaceful haven in the bustling city.
