Whispers of history echo within these hallowed walls. St Mary Abchurch stands before you a testament to resilience and faith. This church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary first appears in records from 1198-1199 a time when London’s skyline was vastly different. Its medieval predecessor met a fiery end during the Great Fire of 1666. A devastating event that reshaped the City of London forever.

The church you see today is a masterpiece of Sir Christopher Wren’s genius. It is a stunning example of Baroque architecture. Wren rebuilt it between 1681 and 1687. He cleverly incorporated the original church’s dedication into this impressive structure. Sadly the church wasn’t spared from later conflict. A bomb struck St Mary Abchurch during the Blitz of World War II. The damage was extensive. The dome suffered greatly. The church required substantial restoration. The talented W Godfrey Allen led this meticulous repair work between 1948 and 1953. The dome was returned to its former glory thanks to the dedication of many skilled artisans.

Step inside St Mary Abchurch and marvel at its interior. The ceiling is a breathtaking painted cupola. It is a masterpiece of trompe-l’oeil. The artist William Snow created it in 1708. He was a member of the Painter-Stainers’ Company. His work was so remarkable that it has been repainted and restored several times over the centuries. Notice the beautiful Grinling Gibbons carvings. The pulpit and door cases are also exceptional pieces of craftsmanship. The altar piece is one of Gibbons’ most impressive works. Few visitors appreciate the detail of his work. Few know his original bill from 1688 is still available. It is in the Guildhall Library.

The history of St Mary Abchurch is woven into the fabric of London. The church serves as a poignant reminder of times past. It is also a beacon of hope and faith. It represents the enduring spirit of Londoners. They persevered despite immense challenges. Many memorials sit within St Mary Abchurch. One of the most noteworthy is that of Peter Perchard a former Lord Mayor of London. His family is also buried here.

As you leave St Mary Abchurch remember its rich history. Remember its resilience. Consider the many stories held within these stones. This church is more than just a building. It is a living testament to the faith and spirit of London itself.
