Why did the tower of St Mary Oatlands never get consecrated? That’s a story whispered among the parishioners a tale of stubbornness and hats. St Mary Oatlands isn’t just a church it’s a living testament to the growth of Oatlands village. Built in 1861 as a chapel to serve the growing population and the nearby Convalescent Institution it opened its doors in 1862. The Bishop of Winchester presided. It wasn’t formally consecrated until 1867. The parish itself wasn’t established until 1869. Expansion continued. A north aisle was added in 1873 an organ installed in the same year. Then came the tower in 1905. A memorial to one of the original trustees George Thomas Woodroffe. But this tower stands unconsecrated. Why? Because one of the wardens a man who frequently took a shortcut from his home to Walton Station refused to remove his hat when passing under the consecrated tower. He preferred the convenience of his shortcut to religious decorum. Another tale involves a parishioner who promised a clock for the tower if his wife bore him a son. She gave birth to daughters only. The tower remains clockless. The bells a different story. Intended for the Indian Durbar in 1911 they were eventually installed in 1913 at St Mary Oatlands their rich tones echoing through the years. St Mary Oatlands a church built upon tales of growth compromise and the occasional stubborn warden. The legacy of this church is not just in its stones but in the human stories woven within its walls. Each bell each stone each unconsecrated tower whispers a tale of faith perseverance and the quirky history of Oatlands.
