“The world’s most livable Parish”. That’s the aspiration of St. Martin de Porres Parish. St Martin de Porres Church stands as a testament to the dedicated community it serves, a beacon of faith nestled in the heart of Avondale Heights. This vibrant parish, established in January 1963, emerged from humble beginnings. Initially part of St Mary’s Ascot Vale/St Margaret’s parish, the area was primarily farmland until the 1950s. As housing estates sprang up, the need for a local place of worship became clear. Imagine the faithful Catholics, first traversing the distance to St Margaret’s Maribyrnong on foot, then by bus, their commitment unwavering. The construction of the first church in 1961 marked a turning point, with the inaugural mass celebrated by Father O’Shea. The present church, a symbol of the parish’s growth and enduring spirit, opened its doors on November 1st, 1987. St Martin de Porres isn’t just a place of worship, it’s a vital thread in the fabric of Avondale Heights. It’s a place where faith, community, and history intertwine.
