Once upon a time, a beacon of Coptic Orthodox faith arose in Burr Ridge. This is St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church. Founded in 1971, St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church found its permanent home in 1982. That was when the physical structure was completed.

In 1994, a significant artistic endeavor transformed the church’s interior. Magdy Wilson, an artist from Alexandria, Egypt, was commissioned. He created new icons and updated existing ones. This $200,000 project completed the church’s interior. It had been unfinished due to a lack of funds.
Pope Shenouda III of Alexandria visited St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church in 2001. He consecrated the church. This was the main reason for his visit to the United States. It was his first visit to Chicago in 24 years. The visit marked a significant milestone. It solidified the church’s importance within the Coptic Orthodox community.
As the congregation grew, St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church expanded in 2015. This expansion included a new sanctuary. It is named the Holy Resurrection sanctuary. This addition provided more space for worship and community activities.
