He stabbed her fourteen times resulting in her death. Her final words a profound act of forgiveness “I forgive Alessandro Serenelli and I want him with me in heaven forever” cemented her place in history.

Pope Pius XII canonized her in 1950 calling her the “Saint Agnes of the 20th century”. St Maria Goretti became the patron saint of chastity rape victims girls youth teenage girls poverty purity and forgiveness. Her image often shows her holding a knife a stark reminder of her brutal murder but also a symbol of her strength and unwavering faith.
