Hidden amongst Melbourne’s towering skyscrapers stands St Michael’s Uniting Church. Its elegant Lombardic Romanesque architecture whispers tales of a rich history. This isn’t just any church. It’s a place where progressive theology and social activism have intertwined for generations.

St Michael’s wasn’t always the majestic building we see today. Its origins trace back to 1839. A simple chapel then one of the very first churches in the Port Phillip District. This original structure gave way in 1863 to the present church completed in 1866. Joseph Reed the architect also designed the iconic Melbourne Town Hall. The church boasts a striking polychrome brick exterior. Romanesque arches frame its doors and windows. Open cloisters grace its sides.

Inside St Michael’s the interior resembles a theatre. This design reflects Reverend Henderson’s vision. He wanted a space where everyone could see and hear the preacher. The sloping floor with tiered seating ensures clear sightlines. A high gallery increases capacity. Even the ceiling enhances the acoustics.

A major restoration in 1978 transformed the interior. The communion table was raised. The choir and organ moved. The original wooden pews were replaced. Two candelabras now flank the table symbolizing the divine presence and the Light of the World.

The church’s stained glass windows installed in 1988. Klaus Zimmer the artist created a magnificent panorama. They narrate humanity’s journey from loneliness to the New Jerusalem. Each window tells a story. Each window reflects a hope.

St Michael’s has also been a sanctuary. A place of welcome for the LGBTQIA+ community. Under the leadership of Rev Dr Margaret Mayman and previous Executive Minister Dr Francis Macnab it has embraced inclusivity. St Michael’s offers a space for all. Regardless of background beliefs or identity.

The church’s commitment to social justice is evident. It has offered low-cost counselling through its Mingary-Cairnmillar Counselling Service. This service is in partnership with the Cairnmillar Institute. The institute is a non-profit founded by Dr Macnab. St Michael’s is more than just a place of worship. It is a vital part of Melbourne’s social fabric. A testament to faith community and ongoing hope. It’s a living legacy that continues to inspire.
