How often do we consider the journeys of faith that shape a community? St Margaret’s United Reform Church stands as a testament to such a journey. It embodies the union of different Christian traditions.

St Margaret’s is more than just a building. It is a symbol of unity and evolving faith. The church’s story is rooted in the merging of the Presbyterian Church of England, the Congregational Church in England and Wales, the Churches of Christ, and Scottish Congregationalists. This union formed the United Reformed Church in 1972. A significant moment in Christian history occurred when these churches united.

Each congregation within the United Reformed Church operates independently. They are governed by their own church meetings. The URC embraces a three-tier structure encouraging participation from all. Local churches elect Elders who work with the minister. They provide spiritual leadership. Church meetings welcome all members. They seek God’s will and discuss church matters.

Originally, Finchley Presbyterian Church was established in 1893. It was located on Ballards Lane. The church adopted the name St Margaret’s in 1932. Church End Finchley Congregational Church followed in 1905. It was built on Victoria Avenue. In 1969, these two congregations united. They became Union Church Finchley Central. They worshipped at Ballards Lane.

The formation of the United Reformed Church in 1972 brought further change. The church then took the name St Margaret’s United Reformed Church. It moved to Victoria Avenue. This is its current location.

Two embroidery panels hold special significance for the congregation. They symbolize the church’s journey and mission. They represent the past and offer hope for the future. Each panel features an outline of one of the original churches. The tapestry depicting St Margaret’s Presbyterian Church includes a memorial window. A Celtic cross symbolizes its Scottish roots. It springs from a rainbow. This reminds us of the Covenant with Noah.

The tapestry from Church End Finchley Congregational Church showcases a window. It casts a shadow. Rays of light form a cross. They also create a road. This road symbolizes the journey with Christ. A vine trail connects both panels. It represents the link between the past and the present. A chain signifies the people who have been the church throughout time. They are described as links of gold in a perfect chain.

After a century of worship, St Margaret’s continues to evolve. The church strives to find new ways to share the good news of Jesus. After three and a half years of redevelopment, St Margaret’s reopened in October 2021.

The story of St Margaret’s United Reformed Church is a story of unity. It is a story of faith and continuous evolution. As we stand here today, let us reflect on the journeys of those who came before us. Let us also consider the future of this vibrant community.
