Here at St. Margaret of Scotland RC Church, we find a unique blend of history and modern design. This church wasn’t always here. Mass was once said in a front room of an old house.

In 1930, the Diocese of Westminster bought the house at 130 St. Margaret’s Road. It was a humble beginning for what would become St. Margaret of Scotland RC Church. The parish was formally created on April 8, 1936. For 32 years, services were held in a prefabricated hut. Locals affectionately called it the cardboard Cathedral.

Years of fundraising and planning followed. The old house was demolished and Austin Winkley was appointed architect. He designed the new building according to the Parish Council’s specifications.

Completed in 1969, the new building is called the Complex. The name reflects its encompassing nature. It serves all the activities of a Christian community. It embodies the spirit of the Second Vatican Council. The design blurs the lines between sacred and secular spaces, where religion is life.

Thirty years later, English Heritage recognized its innovative design. The Parish Complex became a Grade II listed building in 1999.

Entering St. Margaret of Scotland RC Church, you might notice the raked seating. The carpeted floor is also unusual. The carpet reduces noise and simplifies maintenance. It creates a sense of home like a community living room. The raked seating improves visibility. It encourages a feeling of participation. Parishioners feel part of the celebration rather than just watching it.

A long wooden partition stands to the left as you enter St. Margaret of Scotland RC Church. This partition rolls back at the touch of a button. It opens the hall for extra space when the church is crowded. After Mass, the community can easily move into the hall. They extend the sacred celebration into a secular gathering with coffee.

Looking toward the altar, notice the cross hanging above. Stephen Sykes designed this cross. He also designed the Gethsemane Chapel in Coventry Cathedral. The cross depicts Christ robed as priest-King. The community commissioned it as a memorial to Father Sidney Dommersen. He was the priest responsible for building the Parish Complex.

The Chapel is always open for prayer. It is on the right side of the main entrance. Weekday Mass is usually celebrated here. The confessional stands in one corner.

Upstairs, the Library overlooks the Hall. It hosts various activities. These include reading, small meetings, and a crèche during family Mass. The Hall has a kitchen and bar. It is used for children’s meetings and birthday parties. Parish celebrations and Bible study classes also take place there.

St. Margaret of Scotland RC Church stands as a testament to community. It embraces faith and fellowship. Its unique design fosters inclusion. The church continues to serve its parish with open arms.
