Why did Margaret Clitherow refuse to say “guilty” or “not guilty”? We are standing before St. Margaret Clitherow Church, a poignant reminder of a woman who died for her faith. St. Margaret Clitherow, known as “The Pearl of York,” was born in 1556 and lived a seemingly ordinary life as a butcher’s wife. However, her world was far from ordinary. England was in the grip of religious turmoil during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Converting to Catholicism in her youth, Margaret opened her home as a sanctuary for Catholic priests, risking everything to provide them refuge and a place to celebrate Mass. This act of defiance, considered treasonous at the time, led to her arrest in 1586. During her trial, Margaret made the extraordinary decision to refuse to plead. This might seem baffling, but it was a calculated act of love. By refusing to plead, she prevented a trial where her children would be forced to testify against her, sparing them from unimaginable pressure and potential punishment. Condemned for her silence, Margaret was sentenced to a horrific death: crushed to death under the weight of a door, a punishment known as peine forte et dure. Margaret Clitherow’s story is one of unwavering faith and incredible maternal sacrifice. Even facing unimaginable pressure, she chose her faith and the well-being of her children. St. Margaret Clitherow’s legacy is a testament to the enduring power of faith and the lengths to which one woman would go to protect her family and her beliefs.
