Marcellin Champagnat. A name whispered with reverence at this very spot, before his statue. Here, at Marcellin College in Auckland, his legacy lives on. St. Marcellin Champagnat. The very name of this college is a tribute to him, its founder and patron saint. The statue before you captures the spirit of this remarkable man.

St. Marcellin Champagnat Statue stands not just as a piece of art. It represents a story of dedication, resilience, and a deep commitment to education. Born in 1789, the year the French Revolution ignited, Marcellin Champagnat’s early life was marked by educational struggles. He didn’t find academic success until his seminary years in Lyons. It was during this time, amidst the social and political upheaval of post-revolutionary France, that an idea sparked within him. He envisioned an order of teaching brothers dedicated to the education of young people.

Ordained a priest at 27, Marcellin Champagnat found himself in La Valla, a parish where the need for education was dire. He gathered his first recruits there, young men eager to teach. These were the first Marist Brothers. A schoolmaster trained them, and they embarked on their mission, bringing education to the surrounding villages. From humble beginnings in a small house near Marcellin’s presbytery, the Marist Brothers grew. They constructed the Hermitage, a building designed to house 150 brothers. Marcellin Champagnat poured his energy into his growing order. He even sent some of his brothers to Oceania in 1836 when the Marist Fathers were entrusted with missions there.

Marcellin Champagnat’s path was not without its obstacles. He faced criticism from church officials, and the French government twice denied his order official recognition. Yet, he persevered, undeterred by hard labor or political setbacks. In his final years, his health declined. He died in 1840, at the young age of 51, but with unwavering faith in the future of his Little Brothers of Mary. The St. Marcellin Champagnat Statue serves as a constant reminder of his enduring vision.

The Marist Brothers, over 5,000 strong, now span 74 countries. Countless lay people continue to embrace his values: selfless service, humility, a commitment to spreading the message of Jesus Christ, and a profound dedication to the lives of young people. As you gaze upon this statue, remember the legacy of St. Marcellin Champagnat. He reminds us that even in the face of adversity, one person’s vision can transform the world through the power of education. His canonization in 1999 solidified his place as a saint. His legacy continues to inspire, not just here at Marcellin College, but across the globe.
