From a simple spark, a historical flame ignited. The St. Louis Park Historical Society, born in April 1971, owes its existence to Marie Hartmann. A lifelong resident of St. Louis Park, Hartmann envisioned a place where the city’s past would not only be preserved, but celebrated. The St. Louis Park Historical Society became the embodiment of that vision. Hartmann, a dedicated collector, amassed documents, photos, and artifacts, weaving together the intricate tapestry of the city’s history. She led the Society until 1996, leaving behind a legacy as vibrant as the stories she sought to protect. One of her greatest triumphs? Saving the Milwaukee Road Depot from demolition. This Eastlake-style depot, dating back to 1887, originally stood near the tracks at 36th Street and Alabama Avenue. The depot, with its thin columns, ornate gables, and jigsaw details, witnessed the daily pulse of St. Louis Park. Imagine the hustle and bustle of passengers boarding trains, the rumble of freight cars carrying everything from farm goods to wartime scrap. The depot’s vibrant yellow and orange paint in the 1920s screamed its role as a stop on the Yellowstone Trail. The last passenger train departed in 1955, and freight service ended in 1968. The Milwaukee Road planned to demolish the depot, but Hartmann and the “Save the Depot” committee intervened. They secured its place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. The depot found a new home in Jorvig Park in 1970. Inside the relocated depot, the St. Louis Park Historical Society began to rebuild its collection. A lone oil can stood as the sole furnishing at first. Slowly, artifacts emerged, including a potbellied stove shipped from Denver. The St. Louis Park Historical Society continues to preserve and share the rich history of St. Louis Park. Their current office on Dakota Avenue houses bound volumes of the Dispatch newspaper and countless other treasures. The Milwaukee Road Depot, a symbol of the city’s past, stands as a testament to Marie Hartmann’s enduring passion for preserving history.
