Standing in front of St. Konrad, you might not expect a story of such a passionate devotion to God to be told here, yet it all started over 150 years ago with a humble man named Bruder Konrad. Born Johann Evangelist Birndorfer in 1818, his life was marked by a deep faith and a profound love for the Eucharist. He had a yearning to serve in the church but struggled to find his place. It wasn’t until he was 31 that he finally found a home in the Kapuzinerkloster St. Anna in Altötting, where he was given the name Konrad.
This wasn’t just any monastery, it was a place of pilgrimage. Thousands of people came here seeking solace and guidance. Bruder Konrad found his purpose at the monastery’s gate, accepting every visitor with patience and kindness. He listened to their stories, offered words of comfort, and always gave a piece of bread to those in need. But there was a secret life behind the monastery walls. Bruder Konrad spent hours in prayer and contemplation. His love for the Eucharist led him to seek communion daily.
Now, this might sound ordinary to us, but back then, daily communion was a rare practice. It wasn’t until 1934 that Bruder Konrad was canonized as a saint. Today, St. Konrad stands as a testament to his life dedicated to devotion, humility, and service to others. This church is not just a place of worship, it’s a space where his story continues to inspire and remind us of the power of faith.
