In a quiet corner of St Helena, stands St Katherine’s Anglican Church. A testament to love and loss, the story of St Katherine’s Anglican Church begins far away on the island of St Helena in the Atlantic Ocean. It was there that Anthony Beale, a paymaster for the East India Company, met and married his beloved wife Katherine. In 1856, tragedy struck when Katherine passed away. Heartbroken, Anthony sought solace in a unique tribute. He built a small chapel on his property in St Helena, Victoria, a memorial to his late wife Katherine. Completed in 1858, it was affectionately known as “The Rose Chapel.” This beautiful gesture was not the end of Anthony’s story. He continued to find comfort within the walls of the Rose Chapel until his own death in 1865. He was laid to rest beside his beloved Katherine in the adjoining cemetery. In a twist of fate, Anthony’s son-in-law was the renowned architect Charles Maplestone. Maplestone, responsible for designing several churches in the region, stepped in to expand and transform the Rose Chapel. St Katherine’s Anglican Church, as we know it today, still bears the mark of Maplestone’s architectural expertise. The church was severely damaged by a fire in 1957. Thanks to detailed plans drawn up by a local student shortly before the fire, the community was able to rebuild St Katherine’s Anglican Church, restoring it to its former glory. Today, St Katherine’s Anglican Church is more than just a place of worship. It’s a symbol of enduring love, architectural beauty, and the resilience of a community determined to preserve its history.
