Founded in 1852 St Joseph’s Institution stands proudly before you. It’s a place steeped in history. It’s a place where generations have learned and grown. This wasn’t always the case though.
Originally known as St John’s Institution it began humbly. Six Brothers from Europe started the school in a former chapel. Imagine the scene. Soon an attap hut was needed to accommodate the growing number of students. On 19 March 1855 a new school building’s cornerstone was laid. The school was then renamed St Joseph’s Institution.
The school continued to expand. By 1900 it had 426 students. By 1922 this number had risen to 1600. The burgeoning student population eventually led to the creation of St Patrick’s School in 1933. St Joseph’s Institution’s growth is a testament to its enduring appeal. It’s a testament to the quality of education provided.
World War II tested the school’s resilience. It served as a Red Cross hospital and housed Civil Defence Force units. A bomb even hit the courtyard in 1942. Miraculously the main building survived. The Japanese occupation saw the school renamed Bras Basah Road Boys’ School. The Brothers were asked to leave. After the war they returned. Normal lessons resumed.
In 1988 St Joseph’s Institution moved to its present location on Malcolm Road. The old campus became the Singapore Art Museum. The institution’s new campus continued to evolve. A Performing Arts Centre was added in 1995. Then in 2013 a dual-track education system was implemented. This included an Integrated Programme and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. The IBDP even welcomes female students.
The school’s history is rich and varied. It’s a story of faith perseverance and academic excellence. St Joseph’s Institution has educated countless individuals.
