“Did someone say 150 years?” you might ask, eyebrows raised. Yes, right here at St John’s German Lutheran Church, we’re not just talking about a building, but a congregation with deep roots. Established in 1861, this congregation predates even the original St John’s church that once graced this very spot. That first church, built in 1927, served its purpose faithfully until 1989 when the winds of change, in the form of the Southgate development, swept through. But the spirit of St John’s persevered. Rising from the dust, a new, modern St John’s German Lutheran Church, designed by David Cole, opened its doors in 1992. This building, with its striking architecture, stands as a testament to the enduring faith of the St John’s congregation, a beacon of community and a testament to the evolution of this vibrant city.
