Perhaps you’ve noticed the unique architecture? St John’s Coptic Orthodox Church stands as a testament to the Coptic Orthodox community. It is a vibrant part of London’s religious landscape. The story of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Britain began much earlier. The first liturgical service took place in London in 1954. Delegates from the World Council of Churches officiated.

However the real foundation started in February 1969. Bishop Shenouda, later Pope Shenouda III, led a service. Regular services only commenced in 1971. Father Antuniyus al-Suryani, later Metropolitan Pakhomious, celebrated the Divine Liturgy. This occurred at St Andrew’s Church, Holborn.

In 1976, the church council made a significant purchase. They acquired a building in Kensington. This established the Coptic Orthodox parish of St Mark. Three monastic priests served there. Later they became members of the Holy Synod in Egypt. Pope Shenouda III consecrated St Marks Coptic Orthodox Church in Kensington in 1979.

By 1981, other communities had sprung up around Britain and Ireland. Visiting priests like Fr Bishoy Boshra and Fr Antonious Thabet officiated regular services. April 1985 saw the consecration of St Mary and St Antony’s Coptic Orthodox Church in Birmingham. Bishop Missael, the first resident bishop in Britain, officiated. This was the second established church in England. It was the first outside London.

The Coptic Orthodox Church has a rich history. Some believe missionaries were sent to Celtic lands in the 3rd or 4th century. Egyptian monastic systems inspired the Celtic monastic system. Traces of Alexandrine theology are embedded in Celtic theology.

St John’s Coptic Orthodox Church plays a vital role today. It is part of the Diocese of Ireland, Scotland, North East England and its Affiliated Regions. Bishop Antony oversees this diocese since its establishment in 1995.
