“A church built by immigrants seeking a better life.” That’s how one might sum up the story of St. John the Baptist Church. Right here in Northeast Minneapolis, this church stands as a testament to the faith and perseverance of Eastern Slavs who arrived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1907, these immigrants, yearning for a place of worship that followed the Byzantine rite, established St. John the Baptist Church. They purchased a former church building and gave it new life as their spiritual home. Their original church, however, was not meant to last. By the 1920s, the congregation had outgrown the small wooden structure. In its place, they erected the impressive brick church you see today. Dedicated in 1927, the new St. John the Baptist Church boasted a soaring central tower capped by a dome, a far cry from its humble beginnings. While the exterior was simple, the interior was richly ornamented, reflecting their devotion. The history of St. John the Baptist Church is not without its internal struggles. Differences in cultural identity between those of Ukrainian and Carpatho-Rusyn heritage led to a split in the congregation. This resulted in the establishment of St. Constantine’s Greek-Catholic Church just a short distance away. Despite those challenges, the spirit of the founding immigrants lives on in St. John the Baptist Church where it continues to be a place of faith and community.
