Thirty-one years. That’s how long it took to build St John the Baptist Catholic Church. Can you imagine? This magnificent building standing before us on Queens Parade in Clifton Hill isn’t just a church. It’s a testament to the unwavering faith and tireless dedication of a community.

St John the Baptist Catholic Church is more than a place of worship. It’s a piece of Melbourne’s history. It was the second Catholic parish church in Melbourne to be consecrated. This grand church is considered one of the most beautiful in the city.

Its consecration in 1923 was a momentous occasion. Archbishop Daniel Mannix presided over elaborate ceremonies. The parish celebrated with a celebratory Mass. Former parish priest John McCarthy also officiated. A parish celebration and student picnic followed.

The architectural beauty is undeniable. The style is heavily influenced by the Catholic Revival Movement in England. Architect John Bunn Denny drew inspiration from Augustus Pugin’s ideas. Remarkably this grand church was built in a poor Irish Catholic suburb. Parishioner and printer Thomas Edmund Verga contributed about half the cost. This included the stunning stained-glass windows. These were made by John Hardman and Company of Birmingham. More stained-glass windows were added later. The church also boasts the second largest interwar Fincham organ in Victoria.

Think of the countless stories held within these walls. The vibrant Irish Catholic community that built it. The generations of families who have worshipped here. The echoes of prayers and hymns. The quiet moments of reflection. This isn’t just stone and glass. It’s a living history. A testament to faith and community.

St John the Baptist Catholic Church stands proudly as a beacon. It’s a symbol of perseverance. It continues to inspire awe and serve as a spiritual home for many. It is a true wonder. It’s a wonder it was built at all.
