“A cathedral-like church, hidden amongst the Victorian terraces,” I begin, gesturing towards St John The Baptist Catholic Church. “It’s hard to believe such grandeur exists on bustling Holland Road.” St John The Baptist Catholic Church isn’t just any church. It holds a Grade I listing, a testament to its exceptional interest and outstanding importance. The story of St John The Baptist begins in 1868, with a plot of land sold by the Holland Estate. A peculiar condition of the sale: the church must be built of stone, not the usual brick. This set the stage for a grander vision than originally planned. Initially, a temporary structure of wood and corrugated iron served the congregation. The present stone marvel emerged in stages. Starting at the east end, sections were progressively built westward as funds allowed, finally reaching completion in 1910. The uneven floor serves as a reminder of this piecemeal construction. The church we admire today is largely unchanged since World War I. Its architecture reflects a fusion of styles, initially inspired by 12th-century Cistercian abbeys. However, the congregation’s aspirations and resources led to a richer, more elaborate design than the Cistercian model. Inside St John The Baptist Catholic Church, a breathtaking interior awaits. Polychrome angels adorn the nave, supporting the light fittings. Twelve mosaic Stations of the Cross line the walls, leading the eye towards the magnificent stained-glass windows. The pulpit, crafted from Algerian marble, commands attention. The double ambos and the intricately carved font add to the richness of the space. A striking rood screen, featuring the twelve apostles and angels bearing instruments of the Passion, separates the nave from the sanctuary. The sanctuary itself depicts the Heavenly Jerusalem, with a stone reredos showcasing the elders of the church worshipping the Lamb. Adjacent chapels further enhance the spiritual atmosphere. The Lady Chapel boasts a unique carved and polychrome altar, while the Chapel of St Peter and Paul leads to the serene Blessed Sacrament Chapel. It truly is a hidden gem of London, awaiting discovery.
