In 1939, a small seed was planted in the heart of Berwick. This seed was the Berwick Bush Nursing Hospital. It blossomed over the years, eventually becoming the St. John of God Berwick Hospital we see today. St. John of God Berwick Hospital stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of care and compassion. The original Berwick Hospital, established in 1939 as Berwick Bush Nursing Hospital, was a much smaller facility. In 2003, it was taken over by St. John of God Health Care, marking a significant turning point in its history. The year 2018 ushered in a new era for St. John of God Berwick Hospital. A state-of-the-art facility opened its doors on Kangan Drive, replacing the older hospital on Gibb Street. This $120 million redevelopment project transformed the hospital into a modern hub for healthcare services. Today, St. John of God Berwick Hospital boasts 202 beds. It houses eight operating theatres, two procedure rooms, a cardiovascular interventional laboratory, and six birth suites. The hospital is also home to the region’s first intensive care and cardiac care unit. The former Gibb Street hospital didn’t disappear. It was repurposed as the St. John of God Langmore Centre, dedicated to providing mental health care, including perinatal mental health services. St. John of God Berwick Hospital offers a comprehensive range of services. These include day surgery, medical and surgical services, obstetrics and gynaecology, special care nursery, oncology, elective surgery, medical care, endoscopy, and critical care. St. John of God Berwick Hospital is more than just a building. It is a symbol of healing, hope, and community. It stands as a proud member of the St. John of God Health Care network, a leading Catholic not-for-profit health care group serving communities across Australia and New Zealand.
