“A church? In a barn?” you might ask. Yes, the St. John Neumann Church in Eagan had humble beginnings. Before its current imposing structure, the burgeoning community of St. John Neumann gathered for Christmas Eve Mass in 1977 in a simple barn. This speaks volumes about the dedication and spirit of those early members. The St. John Neumann Church officially started earlier that year, holding its first Mass on July 9th, 1977. This was just two weeks after its namesake, John Neumann, was canonized as a Saint. Although a relatively young parish, its history is rich. From those early days, the St. John Neumann Church grew to a membership of 4,000 families and 14,000 people. The church boasts two chapels and holds daily services. St. John Neumann himself was a champion of education, a value reflected in the church’s mission. Established in Eagan in 1979, St. John Neumann Church quickly formed an education board and started a vacation bible school. The church’s commitment to social justice is another cornerstone of its identity, officially designated as a special focus in 1988. The St. John Neumann Church continues to be a beacon of faith and service, evolving with the times, yet staying true to its core values.
