The parish was established on March 2 1976. Jaime Cardinal Sin saw the need for a new parish. It would serve the villagers of San Lorenzo, Salcedo, Legaspi and Dulo residents. Before that, their spiritual needs were met by St. Ildefonso Parish. Fr. John Rizzato was the pastor there. Fr. Godfrey Roozen became St. John Bosco Parish’s first priest. He organized the parish from a small chapel community. It grew into an active hub for prayer and service.
Jose Maria V. Zaragoza designed this unique church. He was a National Artist for Architecture and a parishioner. Zaragoza was known for his remarkable use of concrete. His designs showed an unstagnant flow of forms. Cardinal Jaime Sin laid the cornerstone on April 15 1977. The church was dedicated on March 4 1978.
Zaragoza employed a clamshell-inspired design. It features a semicircular interior. The exterior resembles the edge of a leaf. Inside the Church of St. John Bosco, flowing lines create a distinctive space. The starburst tabernacle has a golden anahaw leaf backdrop. Above the altar, ripples evoke graces from the Blessed Sacrament. These graces flow into the vaulted ceiling. Diagonal concrete beams accent the white ceiling. They create a stylized net. This net symbolizes “fishers of men”.
Eduardo Castrillo created the statues and suspended crucifix. The statues depict St. John Bosco with St. Dominic Savio and the Madonna and Child. The crucifix appears to ride a magnificent wave. At night, the lighting enhances the awe-inspiring interior of St. John Bosco Parish Church.
