“A church?” you ask, peering up at the soaring stained-glass windows of St James’ Episcopal Church, “But why is it called St. James’?”

This stunning church, perched atop a hill overlooking Edinburgh, is more than just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the city’s rich history and a beacon of faith. St James’ Episcopal Church was built in 1888, a masterpiece designed by famed architect Robert Rowand Anderson. The church boasts a grand interior with intricate decorations, including a beautiful frieze with the words of the Te Deum, a hymn of praise.

St James’, however, wasn’t always here. It began its life in 1829 as a smaller church in Broughton Place, struggling to accommodate its growing congregation. In 1883, the decision was made to move, seeking a more spacious setting. The current site, overlooking Goldenacre, was chosen, providing a location that could rival the majesty of Edinburgh Castle.

But the journey wasn’t easy. Funds ran short, and St James’ was completed without its planned tower or spire. Even today, you can spot cornerstones jutting out at the rear of the building, a stark reminder of unfinished dreams.

The church stands as a symbol of resilience, a testament to the dedication of its congregation and a reminder of how faith can move mountains, even when faced with financial adversity.
