A crumbling stone whispers tales of Ardmore. St James Church Ardmore stands before you a testament to faith resilience and the passage of time. This isn’t just any church. Its story began long before its current structure. In 1863 a generous gift of land from Joseph Golding laid the foundation. A small wooden church St Peter’s was built by the community debt-free. Dedicated in 1861 it served Ardmore for over 30 years. Tragedy struck in 1892. A scrub fire engulfed St Peter’s reducing it to ashes. But the spirit of the community wouldn’t be defeated. Within months a new church was under construction. Kauri shingles covered the roof. In 1893 St James Church Ardmore opened its doors. Bishop Cowie officially dedicated it in 1894. The church you see today is the result of that remarkable rebuilding effort. It’s a poignant reminder of the strength of faith and community spirit. This church isn’t simply a building. It’s a living legacy a place where generations have found solace and connection. The location itself holds sacred ground. Bishop Selwyn consecrated a nearby burial ground in 1879. It’s a peaceful space for reflection a testament to the enduring bond between life and faith. Today St James Church Ardmore sadly remains temporarily closed. Structural issues require attention. But its spirit lives on. Its history echoes in the stones. It waits to welcome worshippers once more. It is a story of perseverance faith and community. A story etched in the very heart of Ardmore.
