Founded in 1875 St James AME Church stands as a testament to resilience. This church in Denton Texas wasn’t always here. Its story begins in Freedmen’s Town a community of formerly enslaved people. They sought new lives beyond the plantations of Dallas County. Twenty-seven families made the journey. They established a new community and a new church. Rev L T Lambert became their first pastor. Early services were held in members’ homes a simple start for a church with a powerful future.

By 1880 the community was known as Quakertown. A thriving black middle class neighborhood emerged. The need for a permanent building grew. The congregation built its first church. This was a significant achievement built with their own hands. It symbolized their collective strength and faith. The church moved to Oak Street in the early 1890s under Rev D Hill’s leadership. It was rebuilt again in 1899 by Rev J S Powe. In 1909 another building rose on that same property.

St James AME Church was more than a place of worship. It was the heart of the African American community in Denton. Church leaders were often community leaders. They were doctors teachers or lawyers. The church served as a platform for their voices. It amplified their messages to the community. Dr Moten a prominent African American doctor served as president of the church’s Christian Endeavor organization. He represented St James AME at the Dallas District Sunday school convention in 1920. A preacher from Bonham stressed the importance of leadership and intelligence among preachers.

The 1920s brought upheaval. The city planned to remove Quakertown. White officials wanted to build a park. This was near Texas Woman’s University. White leaders worried about the proximity of the black community to the women’s college. St James AME faced displacement. Many residents moved to Solman Hill. The church relocated too. Its building was demolished. A new building rose on Oak Street in Solman Hill.

Despite the challenges St James AME remained active. The Dallas Express newspaper highlighted its role in the community. It hosted graduations for African American schools. The church was a vital community center organizing rallies and events. It played a crucial role in celebrations and providing support. It continued its work even after moving. In 1985 the church received a historical marker celebrating its 110th anniversary. Today St James AME continues to serve its community. It stands as a symbol of enduring faith and resilience. It is a legacy built on the foundations of hope and perseverance.
