“A church built by a prince’s decree” That’s how the story of St Ignaz in Mainz begins. This magnificent church wasn’t just built it was imposed. Prince Johann Friedrich Karl von Ostein rejected initial plans deeming them unworthy of his residence. He demanded something grander something more befitting Mainz.

St Ignaz stands as a testament to that royal edict. It’s a classicist hall church a rare sight in this era. Construction spanned from 1763 to 1775 under the masterful hand of Johann Peter Jäger. The church is dedicated to Ignatius of Antioch a martyr and bishop who died in 107 AD. Its red sandstone facade is a striking contrast to the surrounding buildings. It’s modeled after the Parisian church Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais. This is a detail many miss. Observe the interplay of Doric Ionic and Corinthian columns a clear French influence.

St Ignaz wasn’t built on empty land. It replaced a medieval predecessor. This older church served the then separate village of Selenhofen later incorporated into Mainz. Written records date back to 1259 although its origins may be even older perhaps from the 12th century. Imagine the layers of history buried beneath your feet.

Step inside and marvel at the opulent interior. Johann Valentin Thoman created the vaulted ceiling. The ceiling is adorned with breathtaking frescoes. Johann Baptist Enderle painted these scenes from the life of St Ignatius between 1773 and 1776. These were later restored and repainted.

Don’t miss the crypt beneath the choir. It holds 198 of the original 261 oven graves. Many belong to the skilled craftsmen who built this architectural marvel. Their legacy is preserved in the very stones of St Ignaz.

The church’s organ is another treasure. Initially crafted by Joseph Anton Onimus between 1779 and 1781 it met an unfortunate end. The original organ fell into disrepair. Bernhard Dreymann created a replacement in 1837. This new organ even faced threats during World War I. Its pipes were cleverly disguised to avoid being confiscated for munitions. Today thanks to restoration the organ continues to fill St Ignaz with music.

St Ignaz isn’t just a church it’s a living museum. Its history is woven into every detail. It’s a story of ambition sacrifice and the enduring power of faith. A truly remarkable testament to the spirit of Mainz.
