How about stepping back in time to explore a cornerstone of faith in South Minneapolis St. Helena Catholic Church? This church is not just a building. It is a testament to community, resilience, and devotion.

St. Helena Catholic Church has been an integral part of the South Minneapolis community for over a century. It stands as a beacon of faith. The church proudly proclaims the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Parishioners strive to live out their Baptism in their daily lives. St. Helena offers a prayerful liturgy. It provides solid Catholic teachings.

Imagine the early days of St. Helena. In 1924, the first parishioners gathered in a simple row home on Fairhill Street for Sunday Mass. As the congregation grew, they moved to a bigger venue. The Olney movie theater was transformed into a place of worship each Sunday thanks to the owner’s kindness.

Father James McCloy, the founding pastor, received permission to build a combination church and school. Ground was broken on the feast day of St. Helena. This was August 18, 1924. The Sisters of St. Joseph began teaching at St. Helena on September 14, 1924. They traveled from St. Mary’s Academy to provide religious instruction. The new St. Helena School opened on September 6, 1927. It welcomed 438 students.

After Father McCloy’s death, Father Joseph McDowell continued the work. A basement church and convent were added. The first floor of the original building was converted into classrooms. These changes met the needs of the growing parish. Despite the challenges of the Depression, Father McDowell’s leadership ensured debt clearance and financial stability. This allowed the construction of a rectory.

Father Thomas Harron succeeded Father McDowell. He realized the dream of building a new rectory. Growth in Olney after World War II led to the construction of the majestic Romanesque upper Church. It stands as a tribute to the devotion and sacrifices of St. Helena’s hardworking parishioners.

Responding to post-war population growth, Msgr. Francis Furey recognized the need for a new school building. It opened in September 1959 with 1350 children. Later, Bishop John Graham oversaw further expansions. These included completing the third floor of the convent. He added a fourth floor to the Spencer Street building. The original school building was completely renovated. By 1967, the school enrollment peaked at 1839 students.

In preparation for the parish’s Jubilee Year consecration in 1974, repairs and renovations were carried out in both the upper and lower churches. Bishop Graham guided St. Helena for 27 years. He became the first Pastor Emeritus of St. Helena parish.

Today, St. Helena Catholic Church continues to thrive. It offers numerous activities and ministries. These include a talented parish choir, a music outreach program, and a quilting group. The Autumn Daze Festival is a major annual event. It brings together people from all over Minneapolis.

The Rosary Makers provide rosaries to various charitable causes. The St. Vincent de Paul Society assists those in need. These groups reflect the parish’s commitment to serving others.

As you stand here, consider the countless individuals who have passed through these doors. They sought solace, community, and spiritual guidance. St. Helena Catholic Church is more than just a structure. It is a living testament to faith, community, and the enduring spirit of South Minneapolis. It is a place where tradition meets the present. The church creates a welcoming space for all.
