Amidst the bustling energy of Karlsruhe, stands the St. Heinrich und Kunigunde church. It serves as a beacon of faith for the Catholic community of Neureut-Kirchfeld. The church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the resilience and devotion of its people. St. Heinrich und Kunigunde first opened its doors in December 1953. The church was designed by the architect Hans Gäckle. The first services held within its walls marked a new chapter for the Catholic community. They had previously gathered in makeshift spaces. This included a converted guesthouse. The church grounds encompass more than just the sanctuary. There’s a separate bell tower that reaches towards the heavens. A parish hall provides a space for community gatherings. A kindergarten nurtures the youngest members of the flock. And outside, a charming fountain with playful fish greets visitors. The church’s interior holds treasures crafted by skilled artists. Erich Lipp created the altar, the altarkreuz, and the poignant stations of the cross. Clara Kress designed three of the original windows, adding splashes of color to the sacred space. However, tragedy struck St. Heinrich und Kunigunde in January 1988. A devastating fire, set by an intruder, caused significant damage. But from the ashes, the church emerged stronger. The renovations not only restored the building but also brought a new lightness to the interior. Artist Michael Mannel designed stunning glass windows, breathing new life into the sanctuary. These windows, crafted by the Herbold firm of Karlsruhe, depict scenes from Genesis and parables of Jesus. They offer a visual narrative of faith and hope. Today, St. Heinrich und Kunigunde continues to be a vibrant hub for the Catholic community. It’s a place of worship, fellowship, and learning. The church stands as a symbol of perseverance. It reminds us that even in the face of adversity, faith can flourish.
