Did the children of St George’s Hanover Square CofE Primary School ever imagine their school building once served as a mortuary? During World War II, as bombs rained down on London, the ground floor of this historic school was transformed. It became a somber place, a stark contrast to the laughter and learning that usually filled its halls. Thankfully, by May 1940, enough children had returned to London that St George’s Hanover Square CofE Primary School reopened. The school persevered. Even after the roof and upper floors suffered bomb damage later that year, classes continued with remarkable resilience. St George’s Hanover Square CofE Primary School has a long and rich history, dating back to a time long before the war. In 1742, a school for twenty poor boys was established through the generosity of General William Steuart. These “yellow-bellies,” as they were nicknamed due to their waistcoat livery, even had designated pews in St. George’s Church. Some boys with good voices even sang in the choir. Fast forward to 1898, the current school building on South Street was erected. Designed by W.D. Caroe, it replaced the inadequate General Steuart’s School. Today, St George’s Hanover Square CofE Primary School is a thriving Church of England primary school. It welcomes boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 11. The school, with its average class size of 19 pupils, offers a diverse curriculum. It includes subjects like PSHE and Spanish. It also boasts an impressive range of extracurricular activities, from sports to arts. Specialist teachers enrich the learning experience in languages, music, and sport. Regular educational trips, visiting speakers, and a residential trip for Year 6 students further enhance their educational journey.
