Founded in 1869 by the Josephites a Belgian Catholic order St George’s College Weybridge initially resided in Croydon. Quickly outgrowing its space the college relocated to Woburn Park near Weybridge in 1884. This picturesque location had a fascinating past. In the 18th century Woburn Park gained fame as the first ornamental farm a testament to its former owner Philip Southcote’s vision. After Southcote’s death the estate changed hands several times. William Petre purchased it in 1876 establishing the first Catholic school on the site before selling to the Josephites.
The Josephites initially staffed and managed St George’s College Weybridge entirely. While their numbers have decreased they still maintain a presence on the grounds. The school began as an all-boys boarding school. However times changed. Girls were admitted to the Sixth Form in the 1960s. By 1992 St George’s College Weybridge transitioned to a day school. It became fully co-educational in 1998. A significant milestone occurred in 2000 with the integration of St Maur’s a nearby girls’ school run by the Congregation of the Holy Infant Jesus. This merger led to expansion and a new home for the Junior School in central Weybridge.
Today St George’s College Weybridge boasts extensive grounds covering 100 acres much of it woodland. Two branches of the River Bourne flow through the property. They converge before joining the River Thames. The college also owns a boathouse on the Thames near Walton. The school’s motto Amore et Labore meaning Love and Work perfectly encapsulates its ethos. The college comprises approximately 1000 students aged 11-18. It has six houses named after past owners and more recent additions King and Woburn. The nearby St George’s Junior School Weybridge caters to 600 pupils aged 3-11.
The college’s sporting facilities are truly remarkable. Three netball courts two hockey pitches five rugby pitches a 400m track and three football pitches provide ample space for outdoor activities. The impressive sports hall accommodates various sports. A climbing wall dance studios and a fitness gym are housed in the activity centre. The tennis centre offers both indoor and outdoor courts. The boathouse facilitates the St George’s College Boat Club. This impressive complex offers a holistic education fostering academic excellence and personal growth.
