Remember the echoes of the British Far East Land Forces. They resonate within these red bricks. This is St George’s Church. It stands as a testament to Singapore’s colonial past and its vibrant present.

St George’s Church started as a garrison church. It served the British troops stationed at Tanglin Barracks. The land it occupies was once a nutmeg plantation. William E. Willan owned it.

Construction of the current St George’s Church began in 1910. It finished in 1913 costing about £2000. The church was designed by William H. Stanbury. He was a member of the Royal Engineers. He drew inspiration from Romanesque basilicas.

Notice the absence of a towering spire. This is characteristic of Romanesque architecture. The large arches and clerestory openings are unique. They allow natural light and ventilation. This makes St George’s Church suitable for the tropics.

During World War II, the Japanese used the premises as an ammunition depot. Before the Japanese invasion, something mysterious happened. The garrison chaplain Reverend H.C. Todd removed the stained-glass windows. He hid them for safekeeping. Sadly, he died during the war. The location of the windows remains a mystery.

After the war, St George’s Church was restored. A re-dedication ceremony took place on Remembrance Sunday in 1946. In 1955, new stained-glass windows were installed. Gordon M. Webster designed them. The windows depict the Risen Christ. They also show badges of forces that served in British Malaya and Singapore.

In 1971, British forces withdrew from Singapore. St George’s Church became a civilian parish. It achieved full parish status in 1973.

Take a look at the lychgate. It is a replica of the original. British prisoners of war built it at Changi Camp cemetery. The original lychgate was moved to England in 1971.

St George’s Church is now a national monument. It serves a multinational Christian congregation. People from Singapore and many other countries attend. They share a common desire to follow Jesus Christ. They seek God’s purpose for their lives.

Today, St George’s Church stands not just as a building. It is a living symbol of faith and community. It bridges the past and the present. It is a sanctuary for all who seek solace and belonging. The walls of St George’s Church tell a story of resilience. They speak of faith. They whisper of hope. They invite all to be part of its continuing journey.
