A church that doesn’t look like an average Catholic parish. That’s St George’s Sudbury. It stands as a testament to a unique priest Father Russell. He wasn’t your average Catholic priest either.
Father Russell arrived in Sudbury a growing suburb. He was tasked with creating a new parish. A benefactress Miss Frances Westwood provided the funds. Legend says she only agreed if the diocese gave her Father Russell.
Father Russell had complete creative control. He built a presbytery and church. He built an English Catholic church. It seemed as if the Reformation never happened there.
The church’s interior was stunning. It was designed to inspire awe. The sanctuary’s splendour of colour and light aimed to connect people to the glories of Heaven. The ordered movements during Mass were meant to draw even the most distracted minds to God’s presence.
Sadly the church wasn’t untouched by time. Vandalism struck in the mid-1990s. The fine English altar was removed. It was replaced by a simple octagonal plinth. The current parish priest Monsignor Fairhead is working to restore the church’s former glory.
St George’s Sudbury is more than just a building. It is a story of faith creativity and perseverance. It’s a place where the past and present meet. Where the vision of a unique priest continues to inspire. It’s a church unlike any other. A true testament to the spirit of faith.
