What if I told you that this church, St George & St Ethelbert, owes its existence to a cathedral far away? St Mary Magdalene’s Church in East Ham recognized the need for a mission hall. This led to the creation of St George’s on the corner of Boston Road and Masterman Road around 1914.
Initially, St George’s was just a temporary mission hall. The Greatfield Estate provided the land around 1912. But it soon became clear that the community needed a permanent place of worship. By 1923, St George’s was officially its own parish.
However, it took over a decade to construct a proper church building. Construction finally began in 1936 and finished in 1937. Here’s where the story gets interesting. More than half the funding came from an unexpected source: the Diocese of Hereford.
The Diocese of Hereford had a special request. They asked that St Ethelbert be added to the church’s dedication. St Ethelbert is one of the two dedicatees of Hereford Cathedral. The other is the Virgin Mary. So this church became St George & St Ethelbert.
St George & St Ethelbert Church holds another important piece of history. This is related to the Second World War. The church houses a memorial dedicated to the Second World War. The electronic bell apparatus serves as a solemn reminder.
The memorial dedication took place on November 2nd, 1947. The Bishop Suffragan of Barking attended the ceremony. The inscription on the memorial is still legible today.

Today, St George & St Ethelbert is more than just a historical landmark. Reviews show it is still a vibrant and welcoming place.
