Why did the people of Huchting need a larger church? Let’s uncover the story of St. Georg in Bremen-Huchting. St. Georg stands as a testament to the community’s growth and resilience. The original medieval village church became too small for the burgeoning congregation. So, in 1878, construction began on the new St. Georg. Designed by Eduard Gildemeister and Henrich Deetjen, the church blended neo-Gothic elements with influences from Bavarian and Märkisch architecture. Its simple elegance and imposing size made St. Georg a landmark. The church’s interior reflects its history. It has been renovated and reimagined over the years. In 1963, architect Carsten Schröck, along with artists Gerhard Schreiter and Will Torger, redesigned the interior. Their goal was to show a welcoming and open image of the church. They created new altarpieces, a baptismal font, and stunning stained-glass windows. This collaboration added another layer to St. Georg’s story. The St. Georg church building is made of brick and features a grey flat roof. The church is also wheelchair accessible. So next time you visit St. Georg, remember its journey. From a small village church to a grand structure, St. Georg reflects the spirit of Huchting. It embodies both the rich history and the modern aspirations of this Bremen community.
