What if I told you that this church is linked to an Irish missionary from the 6th century? This is St. Fridolin. It is a testament to faith, history, and cultural exchange.

St. Fridolin’s story begins in Ireland. He was a noble priest. He left his home to spread Christianity. His journey took him across Europe. He became known as the wanderer.

Fridolin’s travels led him to Alemannia. This area includes parts of modern-day Germany, Switzerland, and France. Here, he founded churches and monasteries. These honored St. Hilarius.

One of Fridolin’s most significant foundations was in Säckingen. According to legend, Fridolin arrived on an island in the Rhine. Pagan inhabitants used it as pasture. They initially expelled him. Fridolin then appealed to the King. The King gifted him the island. Fridolin built a monastery and church there.

St. Fridolin completed the St. Hilarius church. It became a double monastery for men and women. He died on March 6th and was buried there. A cult following grew. People still participate in an annual procession. It occurs on the first Sunday after March 6th.

Fridolin’s legend includes a peculiar detail. He is often depicted with a skeleton. This relates to a story about land ownership. Fridolin convinced a wealthy man named Urso to donate his land to the church. Urso’s brother disputed the will after Urso’s death. Fridolin is said to have summoned Urso from the dead. Urso confirmed his wishes. The brother then dropped his claim.

The story of St. Fridolin shows the challenges of early missionaries. It shows their impact on faith and culture. Today, St. Fridolin’s legacy lives on. You can see it in churches like this one.

St. Fridolin is the patron saint of Glarus. The canton’s flag features him. He holds a staff and bible. Glarus is the only Swiss canton with a saint on its flag. Every year bonfires are lit on his feast day. They are called Fridlisfür. This tradition chases away winter. It welcomes spring.

So, as we stand before St. Fridolin, remember the wanderer. Remember the missionary. Remember the saint who connected Ireland to Liechtenstein. His story continues to inspire. It links us to a shared European past.
